Saturday SpotlightHappy Saturday everyone. I hope your weekend is treating you all well so far. Welcome to the third edition of Saturday Spotlight. This weeks Q&A is with the lovely Michelle. I have been following her blog for a while now, and I absolutly love it. Her site is beautiful to look at and her reviews and content are always fun to read. If my opion of her blog is not enough, her blog also made the shortlist for the Best New Blog during the Book Blogger Appreciation Week. So enjoy the Q&A and be sure to drop by her blog and check it out.

What was the first book you remember being read to you/you read?

I’m no elephant in this way, haha. My memory is not long for sure. I do recall having a fondness for The Poky Little Puppy stories. Remember those books you could get in the grocery store with the gold foil binding? Yea I remember those quite well and had so many of them.

What was your favorite book you had to read in school?

Yikes…I didn’t like to read back then so I’d have to say none. I should be politically correct and say Catcher in the Rye or Grapes of Wrath but I was one of those kids that just didn’t enjoy reading back then.

What was your least favorite book you had to read in school?

See above…pretty much anything anyone told me I had to read.

What are you 5 favorite books of all time and why?

I can give you my top five of right now! Does that count? Haha

  1. The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins
  2. Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins
  3. Hush Hush by Becca Fitzpatrick
  4. How to Sleep with a Movie Star by Kristin Harmel
  5. The Bachelorette Party by Karen McCullah Lutz

Do you have a favorite short story? What is it and why?

I actually don’t read short stories. I recently read an anthology called Geektastic and enjoyed it but generally don’t do a whole lot of short story reading.

Share a book that you LOVED but would never re-read and why.

Hmmmm, I don’t tend to re-read any book mainly because I have so many new ones on my pile. BUT if I were to look at my pile of books I’ve read I’d say that I really enjoyed Souvenir by Therese Fowler but wouldn’t likely re-read it.

Share a book that you LOVED and would re-read and why.

Oh I’ll definitely re-read The Hunger Games and Catching Fire. They were just that good. I loved everything about them…characterizations, plot, themes, conversation starters…you name it. They were fabulous.

How do you manage your TBR? How do you choose what to read next?

My TBR is HUGE. I generally tend to read what I need to read for reviews I’ve committed to first. So I look at the calendar I keep and see what is up next for review and when. If I have to read that I’ll grab it and read it, if I have a bit of open space before I need to and I’m in the mood for something different I’ll go the the pile and just see what strikes me. Sometimes I’ll push something up higher because of conversation on Twitter and between friends. I hate to miss out ;)

How many books do you actively read at one time?

One! I’m a girl that needs to give it my full attention. I don’t have a lot of reading time during the work week so if I were to attempt to read more than one book at a time I would likely mix up stories and wouldn’t get the most from them. I’m just that distractible.

Do you go into the library/bookstore with a list or just browse?

More times than not I have a list. Though if I’m out and about doing errands and pop in I can just browse. Even when I have a list I walk around and see what might be jumping out at me that isn’t on my list. That little piece of paper is more of a guide than a hard and fast rule.

If you could choose the next book that is to be made into a movie, what would it be, and why would you choose that movie?

My obsession is coming through in this interview, haha. But The Hunger Games trilogy (which is already on the roster for production) is number one on the list. We’ve even talked casting on blogs and on Twitter. I also recently read Hush Hush by Becca Fitzpatrick, I think that would make a fabulous movie as well.

What movie based on a book do you wish was never made, and why?

Oh heck I have no idea! There are too many book to movies to even attempt to answer this question.

What is your favorite TV show based on a book/book series?

I don’t think I have a book to tv show that I love. What I’m watching now is all original (that I know of). I am highly anticipating Flash Forward starting up this fall. That is based on a book and looks to be fabulous.

What is your favorite movie based on a book/book series?

I love the latest Pride and Prejudice with Kiera Knightly and Sense and Sensibility with Emma Thompson. I also like I Am Legend with Will Smith and believe it or not War of the Worlds with Tom Cruise. The latter is a pretty frivolous action type movie but sometimes you just need that you know?

Do you use Google Books or Amazon’s "Look Inside" feature to preview books before you buy/borrow books?

No I don’t. I read reviews on blogs and determine based on that.

Do you like to read a book before you read a review about it?

Sometimes yes, sometimes no. As I browse blogs I’ll see books that jump out at me and I’ll skim reviews for summary content. I try not to read anything that might spoil big surprises and the like.

Do you base whether or not you will read something upon other people’s reviews?

Yes and no, if I read multiple reviews of a book that pretty much warn a reader off I give that some merit. But how well a book will work for me is pretty subjective so if a story jumps out at me I’ll likely give it a shot. Worst case scenario I don’t like it or finish it…

Is it hard to write a review about a book you really didn’t like? Is it even harder when it’s a book that everyone else seemed to love?

Not even remotely. If I don’t like it I don’t like it. As I mentioned above it’s all subjective. I wouldn’t expect anyone to feel compelled to like something I did any more than I would hope they wouldn’t expect the same of me.

If someone were to ask you "why do you do it," what would you tell them?

I do it because I really enjoy it. I like to read, I like to write, I like to gab and I like to connect with people. Blogging and reviewing allows me to do that. It’s just fun!

If a new blogger asked you for advice, what would be the most important thing you would want them to know?

Think before you speak. Don’t post or Tweet in the heat of the moment. These words are out there for the public to see and judge and formulate their own opinions on so when we get rash things tend to escalate. Stay out of the frey if you can. Now I’m not saying don’t be opinionated or don’t express yourself just keep in mind that being so public has the potential to escalate so choose wisely and stand your ground.

Any place else we can find you (review sites, etc)?

You’ve got my Twitter handle (@Galleysmith)…I’m there gabbing away. I’m also on LibraryThing, GoodReads, and Facebook. You can pretty much search Galleysmith since that is the name I use everywhere I can :)

Does your favorite local bookstore have a website?

I use B&N, Borders, and Amazon. No indies in my general vicinity, I’d have to go into DC proper to get to one.

Favorite review sites?

Oh man that is just wrong to ask that. I can’t play favorites. I’ve got over 100 blogs in my feed reader and I love and read every one.

Other favorite sites?

I’m a huge TV fan so I browse sites like Television Without Pity, Eonline. EW, and such. I admit I’m a gossiper as well so Perez and TMZ are frequents. I generally get my news fix from CNN.com.
